Many people say that some jobs are superior to others. You might think that an air traffic controller has a very important job because a lot of lives are dependent on him. Should he make the wrong call, people could die from a plane crash. You might think that being a barista is not as important. You’re wrong. If the barista made the air traffic controller a decaf instead of a regular, the air traffic controller might lose his focus and alertness—which could lead to that plane crash in question.

In a way, the butterfly effect is relevant here. So is the theory that we are all connected. It means that we are all important. The president of the most powerful nation in the world, the CEO of the biggest oil firm, the most brilliant scientist, the lunch lady, the garbage guy, the messenger, the clerk—they’re all equally important. Everyone with a purpose, whatever that purpose may be, is instrumental in maintaining the existence of the human race.

What’s your purpose?
